Historical context

Constantine I served under emperors Diocletian and Galerius before campaigning with his father in Britannia in AD 305. Following his father's death in 306, the army proclaimed him augustus at Eboracum, commencing his reign as Roman emperor until 337. Londinium, founded in the 1st century following the Claudian invasion, served as Britannia's largest city and the probable provincial capital of Roman Britain.
