Historical context

Constantine I was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337. Proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306 after the death of his father, Flavius Constantius, he ruled during the civil wars of the Tetrarchy. He eventually fought against fellow emperors such as Maxentius and Licinius, ultimately emerging victorious to become the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324.

This bronze AE1 was struck at the Londinium mint under the authority of Constantine I. Although issued under Constantine, the obverse portrays his contemporary ruler Licinius with the legend "IMP LICINIVS P F AVG". The reverse depicts a turreted and draped genius standing left, holding a patera and cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "GENIO - POP ROM".
