Historical context

Constantine I, the son of the tetrarch Flavius Constantius, served under Diocletian and Galerius before being recalled to the west in AD 305 to campaign in Britannia alongside his father. Following his father's death in 306, Constantine was proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum (York). He ruled as Roman emperor from 306 to 337, eventually becoming sole ruler after civil wars against Maxentius and Licinius.

Struck at the Londinium mint, this bronze AE1 coin carries obverse titulature naming him "CONSTANTINVS P F AVG". The coin displays martial iconography associated with his leadership, showing Constantine holding a spear and shield on the obverse, and standing in military attire holding standards on the reverse with the legend "PRINCIPI - IV-VE-NTVTIS".
