Historical context

Constantine I, also known as Constantine the Great, was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337. He had journeyed to Britannia in AD 305 alongside his father, Flavius Constantius, to campaign in the province. Following his father's death in 306, Constantine was proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum, later securing sole rule over the Roman Empire after victorious civil wars against rival tetrarchic rulers.

This bronze AE1 issue was struck under Constantine's authority at the Londinium mint. The obverse bears his laureate and cuirassed portrait paired with the legend "CONSTANTINVS P AVG".
