Historical context

Constantine I was proclaimed emperor in AD 306 at Eboracum, having arrived in the province of Britannia the previous year to campaign with his father, Flavius Constantius. Londinium, established by the Romans in the 1st century AD on the River Thames, developed into Britannia's largest city and commercial centre, serving as the provincial capital. This bronze AE3 coin was struck at the Londinium mint under Constantine I, who governed the western provinces before emerging as sole ruler of the Roman Empire in 324.
