Historical context

Constantine I was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337. He had been recalled to the western provinces in AD 305 to campaign alongside his father in Britannia. Following his father's death in 306, Constantine was proclaimed emperor by his army at Eboracum, later prevailing in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy to become sole ruler of the Roman Empire.

This bronze AE3 was struck under Constantine's authority at the mint of Londinium.
