Historical context

Diocletian was Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305, establishing the Tetrarchy to share imperial authority across the empire. Severus II, also known as Flavius Valerius Severus, was a Roman emperor from 306 to 307 who shared control of the western empire with Constantine I before dying in September 307 during a civil war against Maxentius. Londinium, established around 47–50 AD after the Claudian invasion, served as a major commercial centre and provincial capital of Roman Britain, where this bronze coinage honouring the retired senior emperor was minted.
