Historical context

Constantius I, also known as Constantius Chlorus, served as an original member of the Tetrarchy created by Diocletian. Initially appointed as caesar in 293 to govern Gaul, he campaigned along the Rhine frontier and defeated usurpers in Gaul and Britain. In May 305, he became augustus, ruling until his death at Eboracum in July 306.

This bronze AE1 coinage was issued from the mint at Lugdunum. Struck under his authority as senior emperor, the obverse bears his title with the inscription "IMP CONSTANTIVS AVG". The reverse depicts a genius wearing a modius and holding a patera and cornucopiae, paired with the legend "GENIO POP-VLI ROMANI" or "GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI".
