Historical context

Severus II was a member of the Tetrarchy and served as Roman emperor from 306 to 307, sharing control of the western empire with Constantine I before being killed by Maxentius. This issue was struck under Severus at Lugdunum, the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis, in honour of Maximinus Daza. Maximinus Daza had entered the Tetrarchy with the rank of caesar in 305 through the appointment of his uncle Galerius, a promotion that contributed to the outbreak of civil war.
