Historical context
Severus II was Roman emperor and a member of the Tetrarchy from 306 to 307. Maximian, who had previously ruled as Augustus alongside Diocletian from 286 until their joint abdication in 305, reassumed the title of Augustus in late 306. This issue was struck under Severus II at Lugdunum, an important city in Gaul established in 43 BC that served as the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis.
