Historical context

Severus II was a Roman emperor and member of the Tetrarchy from 306 to 307. He shared rule over the western Roman Empire with Constantine I while engaging in a civil war against the usurper Maxentius, who ultimately killed him in September 307. This base-metal issue was struck at Lugdunum—the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis and an important western administrative centre—under the authority of Severus II, featuring the former Western Augustus Maximian, who had abdicated in 305 before attempting to reclaim power.
