Historical context

After the death of his father Constantius in 306, Constantine I was proclaimed emperor by his army, ruling territories in the western Roman Empire. Maximian, who had abdicated as Augustus in 305 alongside Diocletian, retook the imperial title in late 306 and subsequently sought refuge with Constantine in 307. This bronze issue was struck in AD 307 under Constantine I at Lugdunum, an important Roman city in Gaul and capital of Gallia Lugdunensis, bearing the portrait and titles of Maximian.
