Historical context

Constantine I was proclaimed emperor by his army at Eboracum in 306 following the death of his father, Flavius Constantius. He subsequently engaged in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy before eventually becoming sole ruler of the Roman Empire. Lugdunum, modern Lyon, was founded in 43 BC and served as an important Roman centre and capital of the province of Gallia Lugdunensis. This bronze coin was struck at the Lugdunum mint in AD 307 during Constantine's initial rise to power in the western provinces.
