Historical context

Proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306 following the death of his father, Flavius Constantius, he later emerged victorious from the civil wars of the Tetrarchy against Maxentius and Licinius. He ruled as sole emperor from 324, reorganising the military, fighting frontier campaigns, and enacting wide-ranging administrative reforms.

This bronze AE2 coinage was produced under Constantine at the mint of Lugdunum. The obverse features the emperor's laureate and draped bust accompanied by the inscription "IMP C CONSTANTINVS P F AVG". On the reverse, Mars or Virtus is depicted standing with a spear, shield, and a Victory on a globe, accompanied by a seated captive, alongside the legend "VIRT PERP CO-NSTANTINI AVG" or "VIRT PERP CON-STANTINI AVG".
