Historical context

Constantine I, also known as Constantine the Great, was Roman emperor from 306 to 337. He was proclaimed augustus by his troops at Eboracum following the death of his father, Flavius Constantius, and later became sole ruler of the Roman Empire in 324 after prevailing in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy. This coin was minted at Lugdunum, modern Lyon, a major city in Gaul founded in 43 BC by Lucius Munatius Plancus that long served as the capital of Gallia Lugdunensis.
