Historical context

Constantine I was Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337, having first been proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306 following the death of his father, Flavius Constantius. After a series of civil wars among the rulers of the Tetrarchy, he eventually became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. This piece was produced at Lugdunum (modern Lyon, France), an important Roman city situated at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône that served as the capital of the province of Gallia Lugdunensis.
