Historical context

Diocletian was Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305, stabilizing the realm after the Crisis of the Third Century and establishing the Tetrarchy, or 'rule of four', in 293. Under this system, the empire was partitioned into quarters ruled by two Augusti and two Caesars. In 286 AD, Diocletian chose the ancient city of Nicomedia to serve as the eastern and most senior capital city of the Roman Empire, a premier status it retained throughout the Tetrarchic period. This gold multiple was struck at the Nicomedia mint in AD 294.
