Historical context
He stabilized the empire and appointed fellow officer Maximian as Augustus and co-emperor in 286, with Maximian ruling the Western Empire while Diocletian governed the East. Diocletian established new administrative centres closer to the frontiers, including Nicomedia. Between 285 and 299, Diocletian secured the Roman borders by defeating the Sarmatians and Carpi during several campaigns.
This silver issue was struck at the Nicomedia mint under the authority of Diocletian. It bears the obverse portrait and title of his co-ruler Maximian, inscribed "MAXIMIANVS AVG". The reverse depicts a four-turreted gateway with open doors and facing eagles surmounting each turret, accompanied by the legend "VICTORIAE - SARMATICAE", commemorating victories achieved against the Sarmatians.
