Historical context

After rising through the military ranks, he was proclaimed emperor by his troops following the deaths of Carus and Numerian. Diocletian established the Tetrarchy to govern the Roman Empire alongside Maximian, Galerius, and Constantius. To oversee the empire closer to its frontiers, he established new administrative centres, including one located at Nicomedia.

This silver issue was produced at Nicomedia under Diocletian's authority, bearing the obverse legend DIOCLETIANVS AVG. The reverse design depicts a four-turreted gateway with open doors beneath a star, accompanied by the legend VICTORIAE - SARMATICAE. This inscription commemorates Roman military success against the Sarmatians, whom Diocletian defeated over the course of several campaigns conducted between 285 and 299.
