Historical context

Diocletian ruled as Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305, having ended the Crisis of the Third Century. In 293, he established the Tetrarchy, delegating power to junior colleagues with the rank of Caesar, including Galerius. Under this administrative system, Diocletian governed the Eastern Empire and established new administrative centres closer to the frontiers, including at Nicomedia.

This silver issue was produced at the Nicomedia mint under the authority of Diocletian. The obverse depicts Galerius as Caesar, bearing the legend MAXIMIANVS CAESAR. The reverse design features an open four-turreted gateway with its doors thrown back beneath a star, accompanied by the inscription VIRTVTI - MILITVM.
