Aureus in gold struck at Nicomedia under Galerius, AD 305–AD 306, catalogued as RIC VI Nicomedia 33. Obverse: Head of Galerius, laureate, right. Reverse: Jupiter, chlamys hanging behind, standing left (or standing front, head left), holding thunderbolt in right hand and leaning on sceptre with left hand.

Historical context

Galerius served as caesar under Diocletian within the Tetrarchic system before being elevated to augustus in 305, ruling until 311. From 286, Nicomedia had become the eastern and most senior capital city of the Roman Empire, retaining this pivotal role under the Tetrarchy. Struck between AD 305 and AD 306, this aureus represents the primary gold denomination of the empire prior to its replacement by the solidus in the early 4th century.
