Historical context

Following the abdication of Diocletian in 305, Galerius became Roman augustus within the imperial system established by the Tetrarchy. Under this administration, Flavius Valerius Severus served as caesar before becoming emperor in 306. Nicomedia had been established as the eastern capital of the Roman Empire under Diocletian in 286 AD, retaining its vital administrative status throughout the Tetrarchic system, where this gold aureus bearing the bust of Severus II was struck.
