Historical context
This gold aureus was issued at Nicomedia under the authority of Galerius, who served as Roman emperor between 305 and 311. Galerius participated in the Tetrarchic system of government, having initially served as caesar under Diocletian before being elevated to augustus upon Diocletian's abdication in 305. His reign as augustus saw the breakdown of the Tetrarchic system as he contended with multiple usurpers.
The aureus served as the primary gold coin of ancient Rome from the 1st century BC until its replacement by the solidus in the early 4th century AD. This issue features the laureate head of Severus II alongside the obverse legend "SEVERVS AVGVSTVS". The reverse displays the inscription "HERCVLI - VICTORI N_K" accompanying a depiction of Hercules standing front, leaning on a club with his right hand, and holding apples and a lion's skin in his left hand.
