Historical context

Galerius participated in the Roman imperial system known as the Tetrarchy, initially serving as caesar under Diocletian before being promoted to augustus upon Diocletian's abdication in 305. He ruled as Roman emperor until 311, a period marked by conflict with multiple usurpers as the Tetrarchic system broke down. This gold coinage was produced under his imperial authority at the mint of Nicomedia.

The aureus served as the primary gold coin of ancient Rome from the first century BC until the early fourth century AD, when the solidus replaced it. Struck in gold, this issue bears the obverse legend "MAXIMIANVS AVGVSTVS" alongside the laureate head of Galerius. The reverse features Jupiter standing with a thunderbolt and sceptre, accompanied by the inscription "IOVI CONSE-RV-ATORI N_K Y_L XC" or "IOVI CONSERV-ATORI N_K Y_L XC".
