Historical context

Galerius, formally Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus, was Roman emperor between 305 and 311. Having initially governed as caesar under Emperor Diocletian within the imperial Tetrarchy, he campaigned against the Sasanian Empire and across the Danube against the Carpi. He was elevated to the rank of augustus following Diocletian's abdication in 305, subsequently contending with several usurpers during the breakdown of the Tetrarchic arrangement.

Struck at the mint of Nicomedia, this bronze AE2 piece bears an obverse depicting the laureate head of the emperor accompanied by the inscription IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMIANVS P F AVG. The reverse design features the Genius of the emperor, wearing a modius and draped in a chlamys, holding a cornucopiae and pouring liquid from a patera, framed by the legend GENIO AV-GVSTI C_M_H.
