Historical context

This bronze piece was struck at the Nicomedia mint under the authority of Galerius during the period of the Roman Empire. Galerius served as a member of the Tetrarchic system of government, initially acting as caesar under Emperor Diocletian before his promotion to augustus following Diocletian's abdication in 305. He ruled as Roman emperor until May 311, contending with multiple usurpers as the Tetrarchy broke down.

Produced as an AE2 denomination, the coin features the laureate head of Maximinus Daia on the obverse alongside the legend "GAL VAL MAXIMINVS NOB CAES". The reverse portrays a genius wearing a modius and nude except for a chlamys draped over the left shoulder. Standing left, the figure pours liquid from a patera held in the right hand and carries a cornucopiae in the left hand, accompanied by the inscription "GENIO CA-ESARIS C_M_H".
