Historical context

Maximinus Daza was admitted to the imperial Tetrarchy as caesar in 305 by his uncle Galerius and went on to claim the title of augustus in 310. A committed pagan who led persecutions against Christians, he contested power with Licinius until being routed at the Battle of Tzirallum in 313. This bronze piece was struck under Maximinus in AD 311 at Nicomedia, the prominent eastern capital established under Diocletian in 286 AD.
