Historical context

In 305, Galerius Valerius Maximinus was appointed caesar in the Tetrarchy, later claiming the title of augustus in 310. He shared and contested power in the Roman Empire alongside Licinius, who had become emperor in 308. Struck in AD 311 at the mint of Nicomedia—the senior eastern capital established by Diocletian in 286—this bronze coin was issued under Maximinus Daia while depicting the head and titles of his co-ruler Licinius, prior to their open military rupture in 313.
