Historical context

Maxentius, the son of former emperor Maximian, was a Roman emperor from 306 to 312 who ruled Italy and North Africa, residing permanently in Rome. He was not recognized as a legitimate ruler by fellow emperors and spent the later part of his reign engaged in civil war. This gold aureus, the standard Roman gold denomination from the 1st century BC until its replacement by the solidus in the early 4th century AD, was produced at Ostia, the port city of Rome situated at the mouth of the Tiber.
