Historical context

Maxentius ruled as Roman emperor from 306 until his death in 312, governing Italy and North Africa with the recognition of the Senate in Rome. He was the son of the former emperor Maximian. Despite holding the ancient capital, his fellow emperors did not recognise him as legitimate, and the latter part of his reign was marked by civil war.

This bronze AE2 was produced at the mint of Ostia under the authority of Maxentius to commemorate his father. The obverse features the veiled head of Maximian with the legend "DIVO MAXIMIANO PATRI MAXENTIVS AVG", designating the deceased former emperor as divine. The reverse displays an eagle with spread wings standing atop a domed hexastyle shrine with its right door ajar, accompanied by the inscription "AETERNAE - MEMORIA".
