Historical context

Maxentius ruled as Roman emperor from 306 until his death in 312, governing Italy and North Africa with the recognition of the Senate in Rome. He was the son of Emperor Maximian and the son-in-law of Emperor Galerius. Although unrecognized by his fellow emperors, he resided permanently in Rome, where he undertook major building projects before being defeated by Constantine at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge.

Struck at the Ostia mint, this bronze AE2 piece commemorates Maxentius' deceased son, Romulus, whom the obverse legend names as "DIVO ROMVLO N V BIS CONS". As part of his architectural works in Rome, Maxentius dedicated the Temple of the Divine Romulus to his late son. In keeping with this funerary commemoration, the reverse bears the legend "AETERNAE - MEMORIAE" alongside an eagle with spread wings standing atop a domed shrine with a door standing ajar.
