Historical context
Maxentius ruled the Roman Empire from 306 until his death in 312, holding control in Italy and North Africa with the recognition of the Senate in Rome. The son of former Emperor Maximian, he was not recognised as legitimate by his fellow emperors. He was the last emperor to reside permanently in Rome, where he carried out building works until his defeat and death at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge.
Produced under his authority at the mint of Ostia, this bronze AE2 features an obverse portrait accompanied by the legend "IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG". The design represents the twin gods alongside the imperial eternity expressed in the reverse legend.
