Historical context

This coin was issued under Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maxentius, who ruled as Roman emperor from 306 until 28 October 312. Although recognized by the Senate in Rome and holding power across Italy and North Africa, he was never acknowledged as legitimate by fellow emperors. Maxentius, the son of former Emperor Maximian, was the last emperor permanently to reside in Rome, carrying out major building works in the ancient capital.
