Historical context

Maxentius (Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maxentius), son of Emperor Maximian and son-in-law of Emperor Galerius, reigned as Roman emperor from 306 until 28 October 312. Although recognized by the Senate and governing Italy and North Africa, his authority was contested by fellow emperors in prolonged civil conflicts. His reign ended at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312 against Constantine. This bronze piece was produced at Ostia, the ancient port city of Rome situated at the mouth of the Tiber.
