Historical context

Maxentius ruled the Roman Empire from 306 until his death in 312, governing Italy and North Africa with the recognition of the Senate in Rome. Although unrecognised as a legitimate emperor by his fellow rulers, he was the last emperor to reside permanently in Rome. The son of Maximian, his reign ended after civil war culminated in defeat by Constantine at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge.

This bronze AE2 was produced at the Ostia mint under Maxentius's authority. The obverse depicts his laureate head accompanied by the inscription IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG.
