Historical context

The solidus was introduced in the early 4th century as a highly pure gold denomination in the Later Roman Empire, replacing the earlier aureus. Struck at Ostia between AD 312 and AD 313 under Constantine I, this coin portrays Licinius, who ruled as Roman emperor from 308 to 324. Although Licinius and Constantine I co-authored the Edict of Milan granting toleration to Christians, the two rulers were colleagues and rivals for most of their shared reigns.
