Historical context

This bronze AE3 was struck at the mint of Ostia under the authority of Constantine I, who ruled as Roman emperor from AD 306 to 337. Proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306 following the death of his father, Constantine fought in the civil wars of the Tetrarchy, eventually triumphing over rival rulers such as Maxentius and Licinius.

Although struck under Constantine's authority, the coin features the obverse bust and title of Maximinus Daia with the legend "IMP MAXIMINVS P F AVG". The reverse bears the inscription "S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI" surrounding a military design comprising a legionary eagle standing left between two vexilla, with the left vexillum surmounted by a right hand and the right surmounted by a wreath.
