Historical context

Maxentius ruled as Roman emperor from 306 until his death in 312, governing Italy and North Africa with recognition from the Senate in Rome. He was the last emperor to reside permanently in Rome, where he engaged in major building projects. Although active in the imperial administration, he was not recognised as legitimate by his fellow rulers, eventually facing civil war against Constantine and Licinius.

Struck at the Rome mint under Maxentius, this silver issue of uncertain value features the obverse legend "CONSTANTINVS NOB C" alongside the laureate head of Constantine I. The reverse displays a three-turreted gateway with an open arch and no doors, accompanied by the inscription "VIRTVS - MILITVM".
