Historical context

Maxentius ruled as Roman emperor from 306 until his death in 312, governing Italy and North Africa with recognition from the Senate in Rome. He was the son of Maximian and the son-in-law of Galerius, though fellow emperors did not recognise him as legitimate. Maxentius was the last emperor to reside permanently in Rome, where he carried out building works and sought to restore and embellish the city.

Produced at the Rome mint, this silver piece features the obverse legend "MAXENTIVS P F AVG". The reverse bears the inscription "CONSERVATO-R VRBIS SVAE" alongside an image of Roma seated within a hexastyle temple, holding a globe and sceptre beside a shield.
