Historical context

Maxentius ruled as Roman emperor from 306 until his death in 312, governing Italy and North Africa with the recognition of the Senate in Rome. He was the son of the former emperor Maximian. Although he was not recognised as legitimate by his fellow emperors, he remained the last Roman emperor permanently to reside in Rome, carrying out major building works across the city.

Struck at the Rome mint under the authority of Maxentius, this bronze AE2 piece bears an obverse portrait and the legend "IMP C MAXIMIANVS P F AVG" referring to Maximian. The reverse design depicts Roma seated within a hexastyle temple, holding a globe and sceptre beneath a wreath in the pediment, accompanied by the inscription "CONSERVATO-RES VRB SVAE".
