Historical context

Maxentius ruled as Roman emperor from 306 until his death in 312, holding Italy and North Africa with the recognition of the Senate in Rome, though his fellow emperors did not recognise him as legitimate. The son of Maximian and son-in-law of Galerius, he was the last emperor permanently to reside in Rome, where he carried out building works across the ancient capital.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze AE2 piece bears the obverse title "IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG". The reverse inscription "CONSERV - VRB SVAE" accompanies an image of Roma, helmeted and draped, seated facing within a hexastyle temple while holding a globe and a sceptre, with a wreath set in the pediment.
