Historical context

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze AE3 piece features Maxentius on the obverse with the legend "MAXENTIVS P F AVG". The reverse combines an inscription of "VOT/XX" on a pillar-supported shield held by Victory alongside a seated captive, accompanied by the legend "VICTORIA - AETERNA AVG N" or "VICTORIA A-ETERNA AVG N". Maxentius's rule ended when Constantine defeated him at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312, where he drowned in the Tiber river.
