Historical context

Maxentius ruled as Roman emperor from 306 until his death in 312, exercising control over Italy and North Africa with recognition from the Senate in Rome. He was the son of the former emperor Maximian and the last emperor permanently to reside in Rome, where he carried out major building works in the city.

Struck at the Rome mint, this AE2 bronze piece belongs to an issue honouring Maxentius' deceased son, Romulus. Maxentius dedicated the Temple of the Divine Romulus to him in Rome, reflected on the reverse by a domed tetrastyle shrine surmounted by an eagle with wings spread, accompanied by the inscription AETERNAE - MEMORIAE. The obverse bears the portrait of Romulus alongside the legend IMP MAXENTIVS DIVO ROMVLO N V FILIO.
