Historical context

Maxentius ruled as a Roman emperor from 306 until his death in 312, governing Italy and North Africa. The son of former Emperor Maximian and son-in-law of Galerius, he held the recognition of the Senate in Rome, though his fellow emperors did not recognise him as legitimate. He was the last emperor to reside permanently in Rome, where he carried out extensive building works across the ancient capital.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze AE3 coin was produced during Maxentius's reign within the Roman Empire. The obverse presents the laureate head of the ruler alongside the legend "MAXENTIVS P F AVG". The reverse design depicts the inscription "VOT / QQ / MVL / XX" enclosed within a wreath.
