Historical context

To combat inflation, Constantine introduced the solidus, a highly pure gold denomination that replaced the aureus in the early fourth century and served as the main gold coin of commerce from late Roman times to the Early Middle Ages. Struck at Rome under the authority of Constantine I, this gold solidus pairs the obverse legend "MAXIMINVS P F AVG" and the portrait of Maximinus Daia with a reverse legend reading "VICTORIA CONSTANTINI AVG".
