Historical context

Proclaimed augustus by his army at Eboracum in 306, he contended with rival rulers during the civil wars of the Tetrarchy, including Maxentius and Licinius, ultimately becoming sole ruler of the Roman Empire by 324. Although celebrated for decriminalising Christianity, Constantine lived much of his life as a pagan.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze AE2 piece reflects the imperial imagery used during Constantine's reign. The obverse depicts the emperor with the imperial title "IMP C CONSTANTINVS P F AVG". The reverse honours the solar deity Sol, shown standing with a raised hand and holding a globe, accompanied by the dedication "SOLI INV-I-CTO COMITI" or "SOLI INV-I-C-TO COMITI".
