Historical context

Maximian served as Roman emperor from 286 to 305, sharing the title of Augustus with his co-emperor Diocletian. Operating across the empire alongside Diocletian and their subordinates Constantius and Galerius, Maximian directed major military campaigns along the Rhine frontier, in Britain, Hispania, and Mauretania before moving to Italy in 298. He eventually abdicated the Augustan office at Diocletian's behest in 305.

Struck at Rome under the authority of Maximian, this silver piece features the obverse legend "DIOCLETIANVS AVG" accompanying the portrait of Diocletian. The reverse carries the legend "VIRTVS - MILITVM" and depicts all four imperial colleagues—Diocletian, Maximian, Constantius Chlorus, and Galerius—draped and sacrificing over a tripod before a gate set within a six-turreted enclosure.
