Aureus in gold struck at Serdica under Galerius, AD 305–AD 306, catalogued as RIC VI Serdica 10a. Obverse: Half-length bust of Diocletian, laureate, wearing imperial mantle, right, holding branch in right hand and mappa in left hand.

Reverse: Providentia, draped, standing right, extending right hand to Quies; Quies, draped, standing left, holding branch in right hand and leaning on sceptre with left hand. Obverse legend: D N DIOCLETIANO F S AVG. Reverse legend: PROVID • DEORVM QVIES AVGG.

Historical context

Diocletian established the Tetrarchy in 293, delegating imperial authority by appointing Maximian as co-Augustus and Galerius and Constantius as Caesars. Upon Diocletian's abdication in 305, Galerius became Augustus. This gold aureus honouring Diocletian was produced between AD 305 and AD 306 at the Roman mint of Serdica, modern Sofia in Bulgaria, during Galerius's early reign as Augustus.
