Historical context

Diocletian ruled as Roman emperor from 284 until his abdication in 305, establishing the Tetrarchic system to stabilize imperial governance. Galerius, who had served as Caesar under Diocletian from 293, was promoted to Augustus following the senior emperor's retirement. Minted at Serdica under Galerius's imperial authority, this issue acknowledges Diocletian following his voluntary abdication from the throne.
