Historical context

Galerius, originally Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus, ruled the Roman Empire from 305 to 311. Having previously served as caesar under Diocletian within the Tetrarchic system and campaigned against the Sasanian Empire and the Carpi, he became augustus in 305. His reign involved managing the fragmentation of the Tetrarchy, and he issued the Edict of Serdica in 311 to end the Diocletianic Persecution.

Struck at the mint of Serdica, this bronze AE2 piece bears the obverse title "GAL MAXIMIANVS P F AVG", marking Galerius's rank as augustus. The reverse displays the legend "GENIO A-VGVSTI" accompanying a depiction of a genius, who wears a modius, carries a cornucopiae, and pours liquid from a patera.
